Unearthed in what was an artisan’s village 2.5 km from ancient Temple, inscribed column from 100 BCE features Aramaic, Hebrew, two of the languages used by Jerusalemites of the era.
The earliest stone inscription bearing the full spelling of the modern Hebrew word for Jerusalem was unveiled on Tuesday at the Israel Museum, in the capital.
While any inscription dating from the Second Temple period is of note, the 2,000-year-old three-line inscription on a waist-high column — reading “Hananiah son of Dodalos of Jerusalem” — is exceptional. Read more here.

“We grieve today as we part from Kim Yechezkel and Ziv Hajbi, may their memories be blessed. May G-d avenge their blood. We will catch the abhorrent murderer and we will settle accounts with him. The blood of Israeli citizens will not be spilled in vain.”
The Prime Minister added:
“Today we see what is happening over the border – Iran’s attempts to establish a military presence and the aggression of terrorist fanatics. We will continue to stand strong and determined against all of these. Israel on the Golan Heights is a guarantee for stability in the surrounding area. Israel on the Golan Heights is a solid reality based on ancient rights. Israel on the Golan Heights is a fact that the international community must recognize and as long as it depends on me the Golan Heights will always remain under Israeli sovereignty because otherwise we would have Iran and Hezbollah on the shores of the Kinneret.
Iran and Hezbollah are trying constantly to establish a force opposite us that would operate against the Golan Heights and the Galilee. We are thwarting this and as long as it depends on me we will continue to do so.
We will continue to act with determination against Iran’s attempts to open an additional front against us on the Golan Heights, and in Syria we will act against all attempts to transfer lethal weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
World Jewish Congress urges U.N. to condemn Hamas for environmental crimes
by Cassandra Gomes-Hochberg for Jpost.com, October 09, 2018
The World Jewish Congress (WJC) submitted a petition with more than 22,00 signatures to the UN condemning Hamas’s environmental crimes in southern Israel.
WJC Executive Director Robert Singer presented a petition to the Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Jamal Ahmed, condemning Hamas for launching kites and incendiary balloons that have killed hundreds of animals and destroying farmland and forests.
In the petition, Singer stated that “Hamas is consistently committing crimes against the environment.” He added that “the combined effect of these abominable actions over the past five months has killed thousands of animals, destroyed more than 33,000 hectares of farmland and forests, and released toxic substances into the fragile ecosystem.”
“Local wildlife has been killed or forced to flee their habitats, forests and farmland have been destroyed and the livelihood of thousands of farmers who have devoted their lives to turning what used to be a desert into an oasis has been destroyed,” he added.

Per Palestinian custom, the terrorist, who survived, will receive cash payments for the rest of his life, as will his family. This custom is enshrined in detailed laws adopted and administered by the Palestinian Authority, accounting for an astonishing $370 million, benefiting 36,000 recipients. The PA’s terror budget increases every year as more attackers and their families are added to the rolls. Already, a PA official confirmed to the Times of Israel that the terrorist’s family would soon begin receiving monthly payments: “We are not bashful or secretive about our support for our prisoners,” he said.
The PA’s pay-for-slay program is why the U.S. Congress passed the Taylor Force Act this year, and part of why the Trump administration closed the PLO office in Washington and cut aid to organizations, including UNRWA and programs administered by USAID, that support the Authority. Since money is fungible, every dollar of western aid is one more dollar the PA can spend rewarding terrorists and their families.
Thousands riot at Gaza border, as Navy clashes with Palestinian flotilla
by Judah Ari Gross and TOI staff for TimesofIsrael.com, October 09, 2018
Thousands of Palestinians demonstrated on land and at sea along the Gaza Strip’s border with Israel Monday, with the Hamas-run health ministry saying 29 people were injured in the riots, either by Israeli troops or by shrapnel from Palestinian bombs.
Near Zikim beach, south of Ashkelon, thousands of rioters threw explosives and rocks at the Israeli soldiers on the other side of the security fence, the army said.
Protesters also set fire to tires along the fence, filling the air with thick black smoke. Some sabotaged part of the fence, removing pieces of it. A small number cut through the barrier and started a fire in an empty Israeli army sniper nest, before rushing back into the Strip.

“We’re not looking at a confederation model,” Greenblatt told TOI in an interview.
The idea of bringing Jordan into a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been raised numerous times since the 1967 war, most recently by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas who told Greenblatt and US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior aide Jared Kushner that he wants a three-way confederation with Jordan and Israel.
The peace plan, which according to Trump will be ready within two to four months, will address all core issues, Greenblatt told TOI.
“It (peace plan) will include a resolution to all of the core issues, including the refugee issue, and will also focus on Israel’s security concerns. In fact the proposal will be heavily focused on Israeli security needs,” he said.
Israel’s War with Iran Is Inevitable
by Efraim Inbar for MeForum.org, October 09, 2018
Iran is a formidable enemy. A large country of more than 80 million people, endowed with energy riches, it has always been a regional power. Having an imperial past and revolutionary zeal (since the 1979 Iranian Revolution), Iran nourishes ambitions to rule over the Middle East and beyond. Furthermore, theologically there is no place in Iranian thinking for a Jewish state. Iran believes that Israel will either wither away following military pressure on its population or be annihilated when it is militarily weak and vulnerable.
As Iran challenges the status quo in the Middle East, a clash between Tehran and Jerusalem is inevitable. International history teaches us that when a rising power challenged the balance of power, in most cases war ensued. Sparta challenged an Athenian-led Greek city system, ending in the Peloponnesian wars. Prussia’s quest for the unification of the German principalities under its helm ended in several European Wars. Similarly, Israel cannot tolerate a Middle East dominated by Iran and its radical ideology.
Unfortunately, much of the Arab world is in the throes of a deep socio-political crisis, particularly since the mistermed “Arab Spring,” creating dissension and a political vacuum, which the sophisticated revolutionary elite in Iran has capitalized upon. These dynamics explain the rise of Hezbollah in Lebanon and the power grab of the Houthi Shi’ite sect in Yemen.
